Snapchat in the Classroom?

Recently, I read an article in the New York Times about Snapchat, the video messaging app that has barnstormed its way toward valuations in the billions of dollars. The article’s title, “Snapchat: A New Mobile Challenge for Storytelling,” caught my attention and got me looking around the Snapchat site and watching some of their “stories.” The ones I watched were mostly reportorial, with someone giving information accompanied by images. But they got me wondering about other kinds of stories and how they might be told and circulated via Snapchat. [read more]

Talking about Audience and Social Media

While the students I teach are typically adept at personal uses of social media, they often need to learn how to use digital tools for professional purposes as they prepare for their future careers.

This week, I had a personal experience that will make a great discussion starter to talk with students about audience and social media. It all started with my decision to replace my three-year-old phone while keeping my unlimited data plan. I went into the Verizon store and said I needed two things: I wanted to buy a new phone at full price, and I did not want to change my contract in anyway. [read more]

The Evils of Social Media

Last Thursday, Here and Now’s story on “Social Media Buzz” included a discussion of livestreaming and stormchasers. The story started on a positive note, discussing how posts on social media sometimes reach people with word of an impending storm more quickly than news updates and the National Weather Service. Yay! Social media helps people!

Then the perspective changed. Host Robin Young talked about how stormchasers sometimes continue to film a storm when they should be taking cover. She commented, “Social media drives people to do things they might not otherwise do.” Boo! Social media is the devil! [read more]

How Well Do You Listen?

Just a few weeks ago, Freddie Gray—a young African American man in Baltimore—died after being injured while in police custody, precipitating a rash of protests expressing anger, frustration, and rage. Then just a few days ago, the six officers involved were charged by State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby with crimes ranging from assault to second-degree murder. This series of events is the latest in a string of unnecessary deaths of black men at the hands of police, and it’s one that teachers everywhere need to think carefully about.

You have probably been following this case and reading a range of responses and analyses, as I have. But the account I have been most touched by is a Facebook post from Julia Blount, reprinted on April 29 on Salon. [read more]

Tools for Faking Social Media

Students in the writing and digital media course that I teach have started work on their final project, the “remix a story” project that I have mentioned in previous posts. For this project, students choose a story (fiction or nonfiction) and retell that story using digital composing tools. The goal is to get beyond primarily linguistic stories to create stories that engage multiple modes of communication fully.

Many students will include social media as part of their remix. I have had projects that included things such as Twitter updates from Little Red Riding Hood and Facebook updates from characters in The Little Mermaid. As creative and fun as these projects are, they bring challenges [read more]

My blog post typically includes a photo I have found on Flickr, using Creative Commons search. In class, we are likely to talk about Facebook, Flickr, or Pinterest. A List of Ten Inspired by Literary Starbucks

Earlier this month, a colleague shared the image on the right on her Facebook news feed. A few seconds of searching on Google led me to the origin, the Literary Starbucks Tumblr blog.

The idea is simple: the site, which is just over a month old, publishes descriptions of the Starbucks’ orders for various authors and characters. Some of the posts are descriptive, like that for George R.R. Martin on the right. Some include snippets of overheard dialogue between the barista and the customer, like the orders for Frodo or Isaac Asimov. Others mimic the verse of the author, like the orders for Dr. Seuss and for Langston Hughes (one of my favorites).

Not only is the site fun to read, but Literary Starbucks could also inspire some interesting student work. Students have to get inside the author’s or character’s head, think about her decisions, and then show what would happen in a style that mimics the original. It’s the kind of activity that requires a strong understanding of the original text. [read more]

A Digital Canary in the Coal Mine?

Recently I received a student journalist’s request to comment on a phenomenon that she identified as a decline in traditional dating practices among millennials.  More specifically, she wanted to know what I think about certain “practice dating” groups that are forming to guide young people in how to behave during actual face-to-face dates.  “Why,” she asked me, “is there a growing need for practice dates, and why are millennials finding it harder to communicate face to face?” [read more]

Snapchat Mashups

I love “28 Snapchats From Harry Potter.” The BuzzFeed article compiles Snapchat-like images that mashup images from the Harry Potter movies with pop culture comments and puns, like the “Snapechat” image on the right.

Much like the Pinterest activities I shared two weeks ago, these Snapchat mashups would work as inspiration for the multimodal remix assignment students work on in the Writing and Digital Media course that I teach. [read more]
